Mattot -Finding a parking space

It is difficult to live up to commitments made in difficult times – the following story demonstrates this

A man is driving to a job interview, drives around the block for two hours looking for a parking spot without success.   He notices he’s going to be late… there’s no parking anywhere- in his desperation he approaches the busy parking lot of the company.  He starts to pray. “Please God; help me find a parking spot.  I can’t be late for this job interview – I really need this job…my family needs me to get this job. Please, help me find a parking spot right next to the front door. Dear Lord I promise that if you help me find a parking space I’ll do anything: I’ll start eating only glatt kosher food, I’ll never miss a minyan and do all the mitzvahs I’m supposed to.  Please God, one little parking spot.”

Five seconds later, just as the man is approaching the front of the building complex, he sees a car backing out from a spot right in front of the main entrance!  The man is elated!  He parks, grabs his briefcase, and as he is getting out the car he casts his eyes toward the sky and he says, “Never mind, God.  I found one on my own.”

The Parsha of Nedarim [vows] (Bamidbar – Numbers, 30:2) opens in a most curious manner, “Vayidaber Moshe el rashei ha’matos,” deviating from the more familiar introduction to the mitzvos, “Vayidaber Hashem el Moshe leimor…”
Moshe always taught every mitzvah first to the leaders, who, in turn, disseminated it to the rest of the nation, so why does the Torah
highlight their role here? Why is that stage in the transmission process – of Moshe teaching the leaders – emphasized here, so much so that Rashi needs to dispel the possibility that perhaps these laws of oath and vows only apply to them?

R. Moshe Sofer, the Chasam Sofer explained that the message of this mitzvah needs to resonate loud and clear with the leaders. When you take a vow, do not break it. With all the promises and commitments they make, leaders need to know this well: lo yachel d’varo – you must not violate your word. If you say it, live up to it. If you cannot live up to it, then do not say it.

We  all need to live up to and carry out all the commitments and assurances we make – to Hashem, to others and even to ourselves but  our leaders  make promises and don’t consider themselves  binding therefore the instructions of the Torah in the matter of the importance of keeping ones word is initially and specifically addressed to them!.
